"Can I drive home after the procedure.?"
In the majority of the cases, you may drive home
after your procedure. However, some people will
require a driver because they feel unsteady,
weak, or have pain. The first time we see you,
we request that you have a driver. The need for a
driver on return visits may vary. You may not
drive if you receive sedation.
"What are my limitations after the procedure?"
Generally, you will be able to perform normal daily functions the day of your
procedure. This will vary from person to person. We ask that you do not exercise, do
heavy chores or lifting the day of the procedure. Most patients are able to go out to
a restaurant or shop after they have rested for a few hours. If you have been sedated
you may have to rest for a longer period of time. A more detailed list of post
procedure instructions will be given to you before you leave.
"Do I need to go back to my referring doctor?"
At the conclusion of your treatment, and sometimes between procedures, you should
go back to see the doctor who initially sent you. We will be sending your doctor
reports as your treatment progresses, but some physicians will want to see you while
we are in the middle of our treatment. We ask that you contact your referring
doctor to see if they want to see you when all the treatments are completed, or
sooner.
"Will I have sedation?"
There are just a few, limited procedures during which sedation is necessary. The
majority of the procedures do not require it, and we will use local anesthesia at the
site of the injection.
"If I am sedated, am I out and unconscious?"
No. If you receive sedation, you will have lessened anxiety, but some patients will
not feel much effect of the medication. This is due to each person's own
metabolism, and their exposure to prior sedatives. The amount of sedation you
receive will be determined by your physician and various factors taken into account,
including co-existing medical conditions. You will not be unconscious or 'out'.
"Will my injection hurt?"
Local anesthetics are used to numb (deaden) the skin at the site of injection. This
local anesthetic application is usually what hurts the most, and is similar to a bee
sting. Afterwards, most patients feel pressure. However, each person is different
in how they react to local anesthetics, and may experience more pressure than
others. Your physician will communicate with you during the procedure to make sure
that you are as comfortable as possible while not comprimising safety.
"What do I if I have a problem?"
Detailed instructions wil be given to you before you depart. If you have what you
consider to be a medical emergency, immmediately dial 911 and state the nature of
the emergency. Do not contact the office, time is of the essence. This would occur
in only the rarest instance, as we will not discharge you unless you are stable.
If you believe that you are having a reaction or side-effect that is non-life
threatening, we ask that you contact the office. If the office is closed, the
answering service number is provided on the message. It is 628-5438.
"How will I be billed?"
You will receive two(2) bills. One will be for professional services rendered by your
physician. The other will be from Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital for the
use of their facility, equipment, medications, and personnel involved in your
procedure. If you have questions about your bill, please call the following numbers:
For the professional (physician) services: Joann 473-0104 ext 2
