Spondylolisthesis
Spondylolisthesis (spon-dee-low-lis-thee-sis)
occurs when one vertebrae slips forward in
relation to an adjacent vertebrae, usually
in the lumbar spine.  Symptoms usually
come from spinal nerves which may be
pinched as the vertebrae slips forward.
Once symptoms begin, patients usually
have constant low grade back discomfort
that is aggravated by activity and relieved
by rest.  Other symptoms of
spondylolisthesis include pain in the, legs,
muscle spasms, weakness, and/or
tigthness of the leg muscles. Some
patients may be without symptoms and
only learn of their spondylolisthesis when
they have an x-ray or other imaging study.

Spondylolisthesis can be congenital
(present at birth) or develop during
childhood or later on in life. It can result
from physical stress to the spine from
carrying heavy objects, lifting weights,
contact sports, gymnastics, trauma, and
general wear and tear. As the vertebral
components degenerate the integrity of
the spine is compromised.
Another type of spondylolisthesis is degenerative spondylolisthesis, occurring usually after
age 50. This may create a narrowing of the spinal canal (spinal stenosis).
